Technology is transforming our world and it is fundamental that you take yourself part of this change. Today, one of the most important achievements consists on attracting more girls and women to the technology field.
Only 30% of the around 7 million people working in the information and communication (ICT) sector are women. They are under-represented at all levels in the ICT sector, especially in decision-making positions. The ICT sector is rapidly growing, creating around 120.000 new jobs every year. Due to differences in demands and skills – and despite soaring unemployment – there may be a lack of 900.000 skilled ICT workers in 2020.
We need to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
Since 2011, International Girls in ICT Day has been committed to celebrate and commemorate the International Girls in ICT Day on the fourth Thursday of every April as established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Every year, in 150 countries around the world, the initiative involves more than 5,300 events and participation of over 177,000 girls and young women.
In order to encourage girls age 13 to 18 to consider education and career paths in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math.), Cisco opens the doors and spends a day with them. The last 28th of April, our cofounder Mary Franzese was invited to take part to the event in Cisco Italia. She had the honor to share her experience and passion for technologies, as well as her strong commitment about this topic.
Women are the future and they have the power to change it. So, raise your voice, be passionate about your job and fight to achieve your dreams.
